My role: Social secretary

I first got involved with the OCV at age 17. I will always remember the first task that I went to at Boundary Brook. It was hedgelaying and John Gorrill was leading. It rained for most of the day and we all got covered in mud. I still came back for more the next Sunday.

As is tradition (it seems) at OCV meetings, I was first persuaded to join the committee when I decided to find out more about OCV by coming to one of the monthly meetings in the Town Hall. It was mentioned that OCV were lacking a Publicity Officer and I was asked if I would like to fill the position. So naturally I said yes. I did that job for about a year.

A while after I had joined the committee, Nora Allavoine who was Social Secretary before me left these shores to return to her native Belgium. Thinking that being Social Secretary would be a fun job, I asked if I could fill in and be Social Secretary instead of Publicity Officer.

My role mainly involves me thinking up fun things for OCV to do once a month. I then have to advertise the event on the website and send an email to the OCV mailing list to confirm details like when and where we meet, etc. Usually socials happen on a Tuesday evening or occasionally at the weekend.

Some of the previous socials we've had:

  • Ice skating
  • Trips to the pub
  • Meals at various restaurants - curry, sushi, Russian food
  • Punting
  • Oxford Beer Festival
  • Frisbee and games evening
  • BBQs
  • A brewery tour

I'm always looking for new social ideas, so if you suddenly have a light bulb moment or see something advertised that looks like fun then let me know.

Keep on conserving!
